Carbide tools demo 13 November 2018

Wednesday, 14 November 2018

Carbide tool were on display, a large selection was brought in by Kimberley, which include different makes and a selection for deep hollowing.

I described the tools I made, how to make, sharpen them and then how to use them.

The main tool used was the round tipped one, it was used for rough turning from square to round, turning coves and beads, also for hollowing.
Several items were on display where only the round tipped tool and a pairing off tool had been used.

The square tool does produce a steam of chips and tends to fly into my face I will have to make a chip deflector, the other tools produce  fine shavings, when the tools become blunt then you get more dust than shaving appear.

Sharpening is easy, a couple of drops of lapping fluid on to a diamond stone or fine wet and dry, place the top side onto the lapping fluid and move it around for a few seconds, dry and refasten on to tool.
